What is Sea Moss?

Sea moss, also known as Irish moss, Jamaican moss, or Chondrus Crispus, is a type of seaweed that naturally grows along the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean.

In the United States, carrageenan extracted from sea moss has long been used in the food industry as a thickener or vegan gelatin. But the Irish and Caribbean people have used sea moss as a health and wellness supplement for centuries.

Why take sea moss?

Seaweeds are packed with healthy nutrients, vitamins, and minerals essential for our body. While you probably have already heard of similar edible sea vegetables like Kelp, Nori, Wakame, Kombu, or Sea Lettuce, Irish moss’s use for health and wellness purposes is relatively new in North America.

Recent discoveries about sea moss’s natural compounds have tipped the scales in its favor. With more than 92 minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, and healthy nutrients, it is considered one the best superfoods just like avocados, berries, nuts and seeds, ancient grains, Kombucha, or green tea.

This highly nutritious alga is currently in the spotlight and studied for numerous medical purposes. Among other things, sea moss is believed to play an important role in preventing and treating chronic health conditions like diabetes, heart disease, kidney disorders, lung problems, some sorts of cancer, hypothyroidism, and many others.

Aficionados also use sea moss to boost the immune system, promote fertility and sexual life, enhance skin or hair appearance, treat allergies, lose weight, improve gut health, and more.

Taking as little as 1 or 2 tablespoons of sea moss daily is enough to provide your body with rare and valuable nutrients like potassium, iron, magnesium, sulfur, iodine, vitamin B12, and no less than … 86 others!

How to take sea moss?

Sea moss products come in a wide range of different forms including raw dehydrated alga, gelatinous gel, capsules, or powder. While any of these work great, the most common and efficient way to consume sea moss is to add gel to foods or drinks or to take sea moss capsules.

Understand that Irish moss is a potent natural ingredient. You don’t need much to benefit from its properties. Quite the opposite, consuming too much sea moss could be dangerous.

When is the Best Time to Take Sea Moss?

Whether you should take sea moss at night or in the morning is quite controversial among experts. While some claim that sea moss should be taken on an empty stomach, others believe it’s best to take it before bed.

In the end, it doesn’t really matter. The most important is that you find the time that works best for you.

Pros and cons of taking sea moss in the morning

Popular advice is to take sea moss first thing in the morning before breakfast. It’s mostly justified by the belief that nutrients are better and faster absorbed on an empty stomach. But while it’s true for water-soluble minerals and vitamins like iron or folate, for example, fat-soluble ones like vitamin A or K are best absorbed on a full stomach.

Sea moss contains a combination of 92 minerals and vitamins. Some of them are water-soluble and others fat-soluble. In that regard, the widespread belief that sea moss is best taken on an empty stomach does not make much sense.

However, if you’re taking sea moss for energy-boosting purposes like many users, it does make sense to take it in the morning, so you'll benefit from it throughout the entire day. It does not have to be on an empty stomach though. Most people add Irish Sea Moss Gel to their morning smoothies for example.

Pros and cons of taking sea moss at night

The high content of omega-3, magnesium, and potassium found in sea moss can help improve relaxation and sleep quality, as well as promote better digestion. Hence, many regular consumers prefer using sea moss at night before bed.

Sea moss may also have a mild laxative effect on some people, especially first-time users. In that case, prefer taking sea moss in the evening when you’re comfortably at home.

Ultimately, the best time to take sea moss is whenever it works best for you. So, we can only recommend you try it for yourself!

Sea Moss At Night Vs. In the Morning: FAQ

Can you take sea moss on an empty stomach?

Absolutely. You can take sea moss on an empty stomach. As we've said above, a popular belief is that taking sea moss on an empty stomach speeds up and improves the nutrients' absorption process. It’s not necessarily true and it depends on the solubility of each nutrient (water-soluble or fat-soluble). But there’s no problem with taking sea moss on an empty stomach.

Many people who use sea moss for weight loss purposes find that taking it before a meal helps reduce appetite. That’s mostly because Irish moss contains a lot of fibers that make you feel full faster and longer.

However, if you’re beginning with sea moss, we recommend you take it with food at first. Irish moss’s common side effects may include mild bower disturbances which are considerably reduced if taken on a full stomach. Once your body starts adapting, the unpleasant gastrointestinal effects should quickly disappear.

Can you drink sea moss before bed?

Chondrus crispus contains high levels of sleep-aiding and stress-reducing minerals like omega-3, vitamin D, magnesium, and others. Deficiencies related to these nutrients can be responsible for anxiety issues and sleep disorders.

Breathing difficulties at night are also one of the major causes of sleep issues. If that's your case, sea moss can really help. Its high content of omega-3, chlorophyll, and potassium plays an important role in lung function and greatly improves breathing capacities.

Ultimately, drinking sea moss gel before bed may help you overcome sleep disorders naturally and avoid the strong side effects associated with prescribed sleeping pills.

Can you take sea moss several times a day?

Yes, you can take sea moss several times a day. If you’re taking it for the first time, we recommend you start with one tablespoon once a day only to avoid bowel disturbances and other possible side effects.

But once your body is used to sea moss, you can take it several times a day. Actually, many consumers use sea moss in the morning and the evening.

The most important thing is not to exceed the daily recommendation. Sea moss is natural but very potent. Consuming too much of it could be dangerous. We recommend our customers take 2 tablespoons per day. Some people may need more or less depending on their individual needs.

  • Dear Latoya,

You can take both the sea moss capsules and the collagen together, but make sure to stick to the total recommended daily dosage for sea moss, as sea moss capsules and the collagen powder both contain sea moss powder.

The recommended daily dosage for sea moss powder is between 500 mg to 3000 mg. Our capsules contain 1000mg of powder each, and 1 scoop of sea moss collagen powder contains 1500 mg of sea moss powder.

You can find more information about how much sea moss to take in our related article here: https://www.organicsnature.co/blogs/news/how-much-sea-moss-to-take-daily

Sea moss is generally considered safe for diabetics. Here’s an article on the topic you may find interesting: https://www.organicsnature.co/blogs/news/sea-moss-for-diabetes. However, we’re not able to provide you with specific advice regarding possible interferences with aspirin or HBP and osteoporosis conditions, as there is no specific research on these. Therefore, we’d recommend seeking your doctor’s advice before taking sea moss.
