Find Out How Much Sea Moss You Should Take Daily!
Last updated on October 12, 2022
Sea moss, also called Irish moss or Chondrus crispus, has recently become one of the most sought-after superfoods. The 92 minerals and nutrients found in this Atlantic alga make it the ultimate food supplement to boost overall health and treat a wide range of conditions.
Consuming sea moss is more about regularity than quantity. As with many supplements, a small amount brings lots of benefits, and excessive consumption could cause the opposite effect and become harmful.
So, how much sea moss should you take exactly? How to calculate the perfect daily dosage to benefit the most from it without putting your health at risk?

How Much Sea Moss Can You Take Daily?
Unfortunately, there's very little research available to identify the best amount of sea moss one should take daily.
Sea moss is not regulated, and unscrupulous companies find economic interest in encouraging consumers to take much more than needed. But it’s a very powerful natural ingredient. While as little as 1 gram per day can make wonders, 200 grams of sea moss could cause serious damage to your health.
Chondrus crispus comes in different forms, including raw, gel, powder, or capsule for example. The serving sizes and risk-free daily dosages depend on the type of products you’re using as well as on your size and weight.
In any case, we recommend starting with the lowest dosage and gradually increasing it until you reach the amount that works best for you.

How much dry sea moss is safe to take daily?
There are no official recommendations about how much sea moss to take daily. One study[1] found that 4 grams of dehydrated Irish moss per day do not pose any health risk even for children.
It is generally accepted that 4 to 8 grams of dehydrated sea moss per day is a safe dosage. That amounts to 2 to 4 tablespoons a day.
Be aware that how much sea moss is safe to take daily also depends on the variety and the quality of the product. Indeed, the nutrients and their concentration vary greatly depending on the environment in which the seaweed has grown. For example, fake pool-grown sea moss contains a lot fewer nutrients than the wildcrafted kind.

How much sea moss gel can you take daily?
Sea moss gel, also known as carrageenan gum, is a jelly-like substance obtained by soaking dried Irish moss in water and blending it. It’s the most efficient and convenient way to consume sea moss, as it’s easy to mix with foods and drinks.

How much sea moss is too much?
Again, scientific research still lacks on the topic. The same study we’ve cited before found that 286 grams of Irish moss per day are too much for an adult, mostly because it would lead to dangerously high iodine intake.
Unfortunately, science leaves us here… We know that 8 grams of sea moss per day are safe while 286 grams could be harmful. What happens in between isn’t clear.
Excessive sea moss consumption
If used reasonably, sea moss has very few risks and side effects. Most problems people experience actually come from overconsumption. Health risks of taking too much seaweed mostly come from two compounds: iodine and heavy metals.
Iodine is an essential mineral for our body, especially for thyroid function. Sea moss is one of the foods known to have the highest iodine content. While it’s great for people suffering from iodine deficiency, consuming large amounts of sea moss daily could cause iodine poisoning in others.
Like any other seaweed, wildcrafted sea moss may absorb heavy metals found in polluted ocean waters. Heavy metals are not toxic in small amounts but may cause damage to human health if ingested in larger amounts.
Organics Nature’s Sea Moss is tested for heavy metals by a third-party lab. You can see our updated testing results here.

Hi Dianne,
Sea moss has anticoagulant and blood-thinning properties. People who take blood-thinners should ask for their doctor’s advice before consuming sea moss, as it can interfere with your treatment.
It has incredible benefits for health but it’s a potent ingredient. Please, make sure to follow the recommendations!
